History
Sloss Industries Corporation has been a major producer of blast furnace coke, foundry
coke, iron, and steel in the Birmingham area since 1882. Sloss began the production
of coke on the present site in 1919-20. The captive production of blast furnace slag
and coke naturally resulted in the production of slag wool fiber at the current site
in 1947. The slag wool operation began with the operation of the number 1 and 2 cupolas
and the associated fiberization lines. A 1200 ton per day iron blast furnace went into
production at the Sloss site in 1957.
This further enhanced the manufacture of slag wool fiber since all of the raw materials
were now available on site. In 1962, three additional cupolas were built and placed in
operation. Then, in 1975, two more cupolas were added bringing the total to seven.
Improvements in the process and manufacture of slag wool fiber and the age of the
original two cupolas resulted in number 1 and 2 units being dismantled in 1983. The
Sloss Slag Wool Plant now operates five coke fired cupolas under one roof, the largest number
of cupolas at one plant anywhere in the world.
