Products
The Fiber Division of Sloss Industries Corporation evolved in the mid-1900's as a
result of the company's Coke Division operations. Sloss has been a major producer of
coke for use in blast furnaces and foundries since 1882; and slag is a natural
by-product of blast furnace operations, resulting from the reduction of iron ore.
This naturally occurring supply of slag set the stage for Sloss to begin producing slag
wool fiber in 1947.
Since that time, numerous applications and a growing demand for slag wool and
various derivative products have emerged. The Fiber Division has remained at the
industry forefront in terms of manufacturing, processing, and development of
innovative fibers in response to a wide range of needs. These products include:
|
Bulk Fiber
Slag Wool
Fiber for Asphalt
Loose Wool Fiber
Sloss Blowing Wool
Fiber for agriculture
Cryogenic

Sloss slag wool is a man-made, single-strand glassy fiber formed at temperatures of
more than 2,400 ºF. It is, therefore, an excellent insulating fiber that maintains stability
at extremely elevated temperatures. It is a highly effective replacement for asbestos
and is widely used in the formulation of fire-rated ceiling tile as well as sprayable or
hand-troweled fireproof cements and many other refractory board products.
Sloss produces bulk fiber under contract for use as a viscosity modifier in asphalt
cement.
Sloss produces a 93% recycled loose fill fiber, marketed under the name of Sloss
Blowing Wool, that is designed as a blown insulation product for commercial,
residential, and industrial applications. It has the density necessary to protect against
convection and air infiltration - even in the coldest winters or in hard-to-reach places
in walls and attics. It reduces transmission of outside noises.
Sloss produces a loose wool fiber used in the Agricultural Industry to improve or aid in
the cultivation of plants and vegetables. The fiber's unique properties make it an
excellent soil stabilizer and carrier of nutrients and water for controlled plant
production.
Sloss produces a low organic cryogenic wool specifically designed for use in bulk oxygen
plants and in those industries where maximum importance is placed on low combustible (oil)
content, high packing density and the ability to hold shape when "tunneling through for
repairs" is needed.
PMF® Fiber is a man-made vitreous fiber developed for use as filler-reinforcement in
various applications such as phenolics, friction materials, thermoplastics, and coatings.
Processed from slag wool, which is fiberized at temperatures exceeding 2,400 ºF,
PMF® Fiber offers outstanding heat resistance and wear characteristics. It is an
excellent alternative to asbestos and a low-cost, high-performance replacement for
glass.
